INTERVIEW WITH A WEDDING PROVIDER: Expressions Photography

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”36872″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Photography is probably the most competitive area of the wedding industry with literally thousands of wedding photographers available in the Western Cape alone. Anyone can label themselves creative, purchase a camera and call themselves a wedding photographer but it takes someone with true skill and plenty of experience to capture your day perfectly. A personal recommendation is therefore very valuable.

There are many photographic styles and different personalities to consider. It is essential that you choose a photographer who ticks both boxes. You should both love their work (have a good look through their portfolio) and get on well with them. On your day they will need to be able to make you feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the lens to achieve the best results.

Ideally your photographer should know your venue well too. That is certainly true of the Expressions Photography team who have shot countless weddings at Hudson’s venue over the last several years.

We chatted to André and Selma, owners and photographers at Expressions Photography.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Tell us a little more about your company and the service that you offer…

We’re a boy and girl photography team who said, “we do” ourselves a few years ago. As contemporary photographers specialising in weddings, our relaxed approach focuses on creating a fun, spontaneous atmosphere. We capture images that are both authentic and artistic. We love telling people’s stories. Each wedding is an opportunity to create images that are not only unique but that showcase how beautiful you are. Interesting backdrops, gorgeous colours and stolen moments make us smile.

How long have you been working in the industry?

We’ve been working in the industry for 16 years, covering our first wedding in early 2002.

What price range is your service?

Our packages range from ZAR 5000 for small week day elopements to ZAR 25000 for our full wedding package which includes an engagement shoot and a beautiful photobook with a linen cover.

How many weddings do you estimate you have been involved in?

We’ve photographed nearly 450 weddings to date.

What is one of the challenges you face in your industry?

As with any industry, wedding photography has its own set of challenges. With the age of digital anyone with a half decent camera is a photographer. The market seems to be flooded with new photographers offering packages that are certainly not sustainable in the long run. Only a handful of people still appreciate photography as an art form and value the work, creativity, energy and hidden costs that go into professional wedding photography. This is probably the most challenging and disheartening aspect of our business.

What makes your service unique?

We always work as a team ensuring that your wedding day is covered from two different perspectives. As a result not only are you ensured of technically sound photography, having two photographers allows for all those unscripted moments to be documented too.

Tell us about a wedding that you remember and why…

Our logo’s paper jet tells the story of our love for travelling. Although Cape Town, South Africa is our home, we love collecting passport stamps. Nothing excites us more than the prospect of a destination wedding. The highlight of our career was most definitely photographing a wedding in Essen, Germany. It’s not often you get to photograph a wedding couple in a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

What piece of advice would you most like to offer brides and grooms reading this?

We strongly suggest a meeting or virtual Skype chat with all of the photographers on your shortlist.  A quotation tells you very little about someone you’re putting your trust in to document one of the most important days of your life!

When planning the timeline for your wedding day, bear in mind that the best time of day for your couple shoot is one hour before sunset, depending on the location of your wedding venue. This time of day provides beautiful soft, flattering light.

Father Time seems to speed up the hands of the clock on your wedding day. Be generous with your time allocations to ensure you make the most of your day and compensate for unforeseen circumstances.

When choosing venues for pre-ceremony preparation be mindful that spaces with neutral interiors and natural light enhance the quality of your images.

What is your service mission statement?

If you’re looking for a creative duo that specializes in wedding photography and combines their love for visual story telling with an ability to document the essence of your wedding day, we could be the right match for you.
