INTERVIEW WITH A WEDDING PROVIDER: Susan Verwey Wedding Cakes

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”36840″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]This week we introduce you to another of our preferred suppliers. We have seen all kinds of wedding cakes at our venue over the years – the good, the bad and the ugly! It is extremely important to book an experienced professional cake maker with demonstrated competence.

Your wedding cake should be proudly displayed and closely admired throughout your reception and when cut it should be moist and taste delicious. Excellent cake making demands a whole set of skills from engineering to artistry, not just the ability to bake alone. We regularly receive cakes that are crumbling, collapsing, lumpy, dry, raw or tasteless. Don’t let this be your cake.

Our preferred cake maker has been on our list for ten years and we have been fortunate enough to sample her beautiful, delicious creations both professionally and personally literally hundreds of times. We chatted to the lady herself, Susan Verwey: master cake decorator.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Tell us a little more about your company and the service that you offer…

I am a master cake designer and baker who specialises in decorating cakes for all occasions, especially weddings. I have won many prestigious awards at cake shows. With years of experience and constantly keeping up with the latest trends in this industry I can produce a unique and visually striking product for each customer.

How long have you been working in the industry?

Since 1999

What price range is your service?

Due to the nature of custom-made cakes the final price depends on many factors including the complexity of your chosen design, number of tiers and the sizes thereof. Tiered wedding cakes start from R2400, R3900 and R4500 for two, three and four tier cakes respectively.

How many weddings do you estimate you have been involved in?

More than 1200

What is one of the challenges you face in your industry?

Clients underestimating the cost, time and workmanship required to make a cake that looks and tastes good.

What makes your service unique?

Every element of the cake is personally hand crafted by myself – from the sugar work, flowers, foliage, and cake toppers to the baking of each cake with the best quality ingredients.

Tell us about a wedding that you remember and why…

The very first wedding cake I made was a two-tier cake for a couple in permanent care. The request was made from a senior carer at the facility. They had no money to pay for it and I was asked if I could do it free of charge. I willingly did and unexpectedly received the most beautiful thank you letter afterwards, speaking blessings over my business for years to come.

What piece of advice would you most like to offer brides and grooms reading this?

To not only ask for quotes via e-mail as there is much more involved than just sending a picture of a cake. Call for an appointment and consult with your cake maker to see and hear what they have to offer. Also look at the work previously done by them. The cake cutting ceremony forms part of your special day and as such it should look amazing.

What is your service mission statement?

To create edible works of art, continually striving for perfection through excellence.
