The biggest part of your wedding ceremony will surround your spiritual union and the everlasting promises that you will make to one another.
However there is of course a legal element to this too.
In order to have a marriage that is recognised in law you and your partner will need to sign the marriage register at some point. It makes sense to do this during your marriage ceremony but if you’re saying “I do” outdoors you will probably need to move inside a building directly afterwards to take care of the legal aspect. This is because South African law states that a marriage must be conducted in the presence of at least two witnesses “in a church or another building used for religious services”. In other words, the legal part may not be done outdoors. Your marriage officer is responsible for the legality of your union and will therefore require that you move inside to sign the register following your garden wedding ceremony.
At Hudson’s venue we’ll set-up a small table especially for this purpose in front of the fireplace. At the conclusion of your ceremony your marriage officer will ask your guests to gather on the lawn in front of the patio while he or she takes you inside the building. While you sign your guests will collect confetti and wait for you. Happily this also provides a quiet moment for the two of you with just your choice of witnesses as you make this momentous commitment. Once the legalities are complete you’ll be announced to your guests and walk outside to be showered with confetti and congratulations. Shortly afterwards we’ll begin serving pre-drinks and canapés while you and your brand new spouse get going with your photo shoot.
Occasionally couples will conduct the legal signing at another time and venue prior to the celebration due to pressing visa requirements, religious or other practical reasons. In this case you can choose to have a “mock signing” either indoors or outdoors or just forgo this altogether on the day.
Lots of couples ask us if they need to arrange specific décor or flowers for the signing table. Our advice is not to waste any budget here. The bridal bouquet can simply be laid down at the front of the table for the few minutes that you will be there for photographs.
