Everyone knows that music and food are the two most important elements if you want to have your guests raving about your wedding.
So what qualities should your DJ possess in order to make sure your wedding music is on point? You will need to appoint somebody with plenty of experience who is professional and reliable with a proven track record. They need to have modern well maintained equipment that will produce excellent sound quality and not run the risk of malfunctioning. In addition, your DJ should also be well-presented, friendly and conscious of completing their set-up neatly.
In this supplier interview we chatted to Dean Hewitt, Hudson’s recommended DJ and owner of the leading DJ company in Cape Town.
Tell us a little more about your company and the service that you offer…
We are a professional DJ company with over 35 staff members specialising in music and DJ services in the corporate and wedding industry. We also offer rental equipment and professional master of ceremony services for any occasion. We guarantee our clients great value for money.
How long have you been working in the industry?
This is our 15th year. Collectively, we have well over 200 years of experience in our business.
What price range is your service?
We don’t have fixed prices but rather tailor each quote to the unique needs of the specific client. We are one of the best priced professional DJ companies in Cape Town which is one of the key elements to our success.
How many weddings do you estimate you have been involved in?
In the last four years alone we have done 2800 functions! Most of these were weddings. We therefore have a great variety of music and experience enabling us to cater for any type of crowd.
What are some of the challenges you face in your industry?
There have been many new entrants into the market in the past few years. Every Tom, Dick and Harry are now calling themselves DJs while using sub-standard equipment and playing a few copied songs from a laptop. These people are often inexperienced and not capable of reading the crowd. Their equipment ends up being unfit for the job and they are unlicensed. They are of course able to charge considerably cheaper rates and therefore take work from the professional companies. It is then up to us to convince couples of the importance of music at their wedding and not let them fall into the trap of hiring these rookies.
Our second enemy is also our biggest friend: technology. We need to constantly upgrade our gear and stay on top of the latest trends – at a very high cost.
Finally, many people have access to music on various technological platforms these days resulting in us often receiving large playlists from clients. We know exactly what to do and how to read the crowd. Trust your professional DJ.
What makes your service unique?
We deliver a very personal service. We meet with our clients prior to the function to understand their unique needs and ensure that we provide for them accordingly. We have the largest network of DJs in Cape Town making it possible for us to cater for a large amount of events on a single weekend. This means we can provide an entertainment solution at short notice with a guaranteed full back-up service.
Tell us about a wedding that you remember and why…
There are so many that I could write an entire book! I remember doing a small wedding for 20 guests in Langebaan a few years ago. The guests were from Afghanistan and I thought the party would stop at 23h00 as it was in the week. They ended up celebrating until 03h30. It was an epic party with non–stop dancing and Jagerbombs!
Another notable wedding was when the bride was on time but the groom was 90 minutes late. Needless to say the bride was not happy!
The weddings that I remember for years are usually the ones where the couple treat me with respect and gratitude, giving me the necessary freedom to trust me in doing my thing – no long playlists and instructions. The best parties happen when I have the freedom to play the music that I know will keep the crowd going.
